Air France Jet Disappears Over Atlantic

USA Today reports that all passengers are feared dead after the Air France jet hit a heavy turbulence and thunderstorms in its flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. The search area where the plane may have gone down is vast and "Brazil's military searched for the plane off its northeast coast, while the French military scoured the Atlantic off the West African coast near the Cape Verde Islands." The last contact with the flight was at 10PM EST on Sunday evening. While there is speculation that the plane may have been struck by lightning, meteorologists suspect that the tragedy may have began when the jet ran into a tropical storm, which have a tendency to be more violent than thunderstorms in the United States and elsewhere

Tuesday, 07 April, 2009 | 16:22 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Air Marshal Imam Supaat, Operational Commander of the Indonesian Military (TNI) Air Force, has said a team has been formed to investigate the crash of a Fokker 27 airplane.

The airplane crashed at Bandung’s Hussein Sastranegara airport, West Java, killing 24 people.

Imam went on to say that the investigation team consisted of engineering and military experts.

He could not guarantee when the results of the investigation would be announced.

However, Imam has predicted that it will not take a long time as there were many witnesses to the accident.

Based on voice recordings, the last instruction from the airport tower said that the plane should go around.

“This meant that the plane was unable to land,” said Imam after leading the funeral ceremony for five of the victims of the Fokker 27 at the Kalibata Heroes' Cemetery, on Tuesday (7/4).

He said he suspected that the critical moment occurred while the plane was going around as its speed was not high.

However, the cause of the accident still needs more examination.
